Art therapy for injured defenders

18.03.2025

In the spring of 2024, during a working trip to Ukraine, we visited our volunteer friends in Ternopil. Activist Olena and artist Rustem have been regularly conducting art therapy in hospitals for a long time to restore the mental health of the wounded. After severe injuries, loss of limbs, bruises, and post-traumatic stress, many soldiers fall into depression and see no point in treatment and recovery. Wounded soldiers who attend short tutorials create incredible pictures in just an hour, drawing with shaking hands, and some even with their teeth. We had the honor of participating in one of these workshops and experiencing incredible emotions together with the wounded. Watching how shaking hands with bruises bring incredible images to life is something truly extraordinary. These are fantastic emotions when you can create a whole picture in a short time and without drawing practice. So many sessions have already taken place in various Ternopil hospitals that the paintings have been gathered into an entire exhibition, which was symbolically called Warriors of Light. In the cards, we share with you the results of the art therapy we visited, as well as photos from the exhibition we visited.
